Landscapes and Aesthetics in Etty Lory’s Paintings

Dr. Ori Betor

Etty Lory’s works display pleasing expertise and elegant rigidness. In her paintings Lori is loyal to what she paints, but in the same ‘what,’ she sees herself, which is natural. Her painting skill, her choice of subjects to dwell on, with color, brush and whatever means can contribute, all these are her. Her works are never only just nature, it is her nature and everything that surrounds her.

Lory’s paintings feature the gentleness of might and the excitement of sereneness. One finds it pleasant to spend time in her work, overflowing with grace and goodness.

Consciously and unconsciously, Lory is loyal to the work of the creator: she presents the sky as calm, while earth is vibrant in chaos, full of landscape details: mountains, rocks, trees, houses, flowers and green fields; one usually sighs at these sights: ah, what a view. And yes, by this aspect as well, Etty Lory joins the creator, in the soft colors she uses to stay still for a moment and relax, thanks to the touch of the artist. In the beginning, God created. Afterwards the artist added – and it happened. Such art is indeed an occasion.

Someone was once asked to define artistic excellence. He did not hesitate for a moment before responding: “I don’t know what artistic excellence is, but I recognize it when I see it.” Etty Lory’s works are for these who can recognize it. And it is fortunate that Lory is there to exhibit this excellence.

In itself, the landscape has an abundance of good that only needs to be unveiled by the artist. Lory does just that with minor optimism, and respect for nature, lines, stains and colors.

Plato was a wise man. He determined that in nature, a line is no more than the space between colors. And that is true of Etty Lori’s paintings. A strong, minor chord.
